In family law, power and responsibility sit side by side. Every decision can change the course of a family’s future. In our Community Involvement video, we share how we carry that responsibility outside the courtroom and into the communities we care about in New Mexico.
Why this story matters to us
Our work at Batley Riley Family Law focuses on families, businesses, and futures. Many of our clients can hire a legal team and want that full team behind them. We value that trust and take it seriously.
At the same time, we know many people cannot easily reach an attorney. In the video, we talk about what it means to hold legal power in a state where access to help often depends on money, time, and connections. We believe our responsibility runs deeper than our paid case list.
“With great power comes great responsibility”
One of the most memorable lines from the video comes early:
“With great power comes great responsibility. And truly, as attorneys, we are the epitome of that.”
That thought comes from a social work background. Before stepping into family law, we saw firsthand how hard life becomes when people do not have resources or anyone to speak up for them. In the video, we describe how easily people can be taken advantage of when others assume they will not push back.
That experience continues to shape how we practice today. We do not see legal training as something we use only inside our offices. We see it as a tool we owe to our broader community as well.
Serving paying clients and those without access
In the video, we share a simple truth: we feel grateful for the clients who can hire us, and we work hard for them. At the same time, we feel a strong pull to “provide a voice” to people who would not otherwise have it.
One quote captures this balance:
“Even though I might have my clients that are able to pay, and I'm so appreciative of them… I'm also making sure to have a connection with those in our community that aren't able to access that, to provide them a voice that they otherwise wouldn't be able to have.”
That perspective reflects how we see our role in New Mexico today. We strive to do high-level, team-based work for business owners and families. We also commit time and energy to legal education, pro bono projects, and community groups that help people who rarely sit across from a lawyer.
What community involvement looks like in real life
The video does not stay in theory. It walks through concrete ways our team gives back and how we support one another in doing so.
Supporting those who serve
One segment focuses on pro bono legal services for people who protect and support our communities every day. In the video, we talk about working on wills and related documents for:
- Veterans
- Police officers
- Firefighters
We describe this as “something that's so amazing that we get to provide.” These projects let us use our training for people who spend their own lives in service roles. It is one way we honor their commitment and contribute to the safety net around New Mexico families.
Investing in young lawyers
Another key moment highlights how we engage with the profession itself. In the video, we share that our partner Lauren spends significant time with the Young Lawyers Division at the State Bar of New Mexico.
Her work includes:
- Volunteering through the Young Lawyers Division
- Helping organize programs that educate newer attorneys
- Building community among young lawyers in the state
That focus on mentoring and community-building within the legal field mirrors the way we work internally: as a team, sharing knowledge, and creating a culture where newer professionals have support as they grow.
Empowering girls through Girl Scouts
For us, community involvement also means stepping outside legal settings. In the video, we talk about deep involvement with Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails, described as a true “passion project.”
One line stands out:
“Empowering young girls and young women at a young age is incredibly important to me.”
That work connects directly to our everyday focus on children and families. Whether we help parents work through high-conflict custody issues or support families building their futures through assisted reproductive matters, we keep long-term wellbeing in view. Helping girls build confidence and leadership skills early on fits that same outlook.
Creating space in our schedules to give back
Many firms talk about community work. In the video, we explain one structural choice that keeps us accountable to that value: we choose not to max out our team’s billable hour requirements.
We share that decision simply:
“We choose to not max out their billable hour requirement, to allow them to have space in their calendars to be able to give back to the community.”
This approach sends a clear signal inside the firm. We do not treat volunteer work as something to squeeze into the margins. We treat it as part of how we practice law and how we live out our values of integrity, teamwork, and excellence.
How the culture feels from the inside
The video closes with a perspective that matters a great deal to us: the experience of a team member who joined Batley Riley Family Law and noticed the difference right away.
They share that when they came to work here, it became clear that leadership recognized two things at once:
- We can stay very busy serving clients.
- We also have a unique ability to help people who struggle to access attorneys.
They explain that the firm not only allowed, but actively promoted, time for attorneys and paralegals to go out into the community. This outside view of our internal culture matters. It shows that our message about community does not live only in a mission statement. It shows up in daily practice, calendars, and choices.
What this means for you
When you watch the video, you will see more than a list of projects. You will see how our team thinks about responsibility, service, and community in New Mexico.
If you value collaboration, clear communication, and a child-focused approach to family law, our story in this video may resonate with you. We work with many business owners and families who want thoughtful, settlement-oriented paths forward. Our community work strengthens those efforts because it keeps us grounded in real lives, not just legal files.
We invite you to watch the Community Involvement video above and listen for the moments that stand out most to you—whether it is the work with veterans and first responders, the support of young lawyers, or the passion for empowering girls through Girl Scouts. Each piece reflects the same core belief: we practice family law as part of a larger commitment to the people and communities we serve.
